Happy New Year- Politics as usual
It seems fitting to include the activities going on pertaining to the world at large. After all, this is the world our children are growing up in...and these are the hands we give them.
Two days ago, on January 6, 2021 the world participated in what will be a memorable, although shameful day in American History.
Armed Americans with a gripe against Democracy at work, forcefully entered the Country's Capitol Building- pushing past Law Enforcement and having their way with our Capitol Building, Senate Chambers and many Private offices including that of Nancy Pelosi. To say that I was outraged at the sight of this is to liken it to being sad at watching the Twin Towers fall on 9/11/2001. I don't actually have a single feeling happening...I have full on grief happening. This should not have happened. I am like many other Americans- and we are grieving the deep cultural disturbance that this has been.
Some things in life are Sacred to people.
Our Government, though it may all too often be a source of greed, discord or factions, should be Sacred to every American. I don't think that what we saw on January 6th reflects that those who behaved as they did on Capitol Hill actually understand what the word sacred means. These truths that we hold self-evident...those are sacred. The sanctuary of certain physical spaces....those are sacred. Our personal sense of safety without violence and abuse...well frankly I hold that sacred.
When you break into my Capitol Building, you evoke in me a type of rage that I then need to quiet within me because I am not going to allow it to create hatred in me. Unfortunately, the less evolved Americans may be feeling more a kin to rage at this time. Others still, will join the folly and divisiveness of these so called "fellow-Americans". They are not my kin. I disown them for their actions. In fact, why not call them traitors and rid the country of them? Maybe that is too far...I will digress.
What will the wise among us say about this day? How will history represent it? What does it establish that may affect politics as we know it? What does it say about our strength on the world-stage or how solid our System of Democracy is? I am an American. My family's blood was shed for this country so I will have my say, even if only on this small forum and to a small audience. My children will witness America rise stronger and they will do so from the driver's seat. They will usher in the changes.
In less than two weeks, we will swear in America's 46th President (POTUS), Joe Biden. Our Vice-President, the first woman ever to hold this office, Kamala Harris will also step up in our history books. It is a breath of fresh air. I am breathing in deeply as I write this. I remember the Obama's swearing-in day. I remember feeling safe, confident. Flash to 4 years ago when the presidential election sent my husband into a literal depression that required him to go on medication. It came at the same time as the death of my father 4 years ago...a month apart from one another.
So I choose to be joyous now.
This is a time of joy and liberation. I am putting behind me the Trump ideals of the past 4 years. I do not in any way see his ideas as the Republican Party's ideas. I just cannot believe that they accepted him into their party and made him their leader, our leader...leader of this country...of the United States of America. He nearly tour us apart. I hope slowly we will learn to appreciate our differences and find a way to actually stay as the united states that we have always been.
I see 2021 as a year with the word "growth" stamped on it's forehead.
Sometimes we take a few steps back before we move forward again. I believe that is what our country has done and hopefully we will recover this year. And fyi...politics will not be the solution. Leadership will.
